Mariners have used a unique bell code to tell time at sea for hundreds of years. The code is based on the crew's typical workday routine while the vessel is under way. A ship at sea requires constant attention throughout the day's twenty-four hours. The day is therefore divided into six four-hour periods, each called a "watch." Similarly, the crew is segmented into three divisions. Division members then stand their individually assigned duties on two watches per day, with eight hours off duty between watches. To rotate each division's watch times, the Evening Watch is periodically divided into two watches. These are called Dog Watches because they "dog" the watch schedule for all divisions ahead by one watch period.

The D&D A053 is a unique model, combining all of the best features of the Tendency Barometers and is the top of the line. It functionally operates as any other D&D Barometer tendency barometers. The beautiful mahogany stained wooden case with curved glass has an aluminum colored brass face plate with a Storm Glass mounted beside the tendency barometer tubes and a hygrometer mounted above the tubes. This is a dazzler.
The Tendency Barometer was patented on December 23, 1818 by Alexander Adie. It consists of two liquid filled tubes. One tube in a U-shaped which is open ended and filled with a red fluid; and one closed thermometer tube filled with a blue fluid, mounted parallel to each other.

When the fluid levels are the same, the weather is changing.
When the red fluid level is below the blue fluid level, the weather is fair (high pressure pushes the red fluid down in the tube).

When the red fluid level is above the blue, stormy weather is predicted (low pressure allows the red fluid to move up the tube).

By measuring the amount of difference between the red and blue fluids on the tendency dial, you get the local weather forecast for the next 12-24 hours.

The thermometer measures in both Celsius and Fahrenheit and the barometer measures in millibars/ hPa.

Origin of the Radio Room Clock:
The sinking of the Titanic resulted in the Radio Act of 1912, requiring 24-hour radio watches at sea. The disaster also led to this clock design, which features two 3-minute periods marked in red, indicating Morse Code silence periods when only distress, urgent, and safety signals could be transmitted.Two green markings, likewise, designate silent periods on voice transmissions, where one would listen for or transmit distress signals. All ships and coastal stations kept a mandatory listening watch for such signals.

The Chelsea Patriot Deck Clock is an authentic reproduction of Chelsea Clock’s original Timemaster WWII era Navy engine room deck clock. The original Timemaster Deck clock is found on thousands of Navy vessels today with a history dating back to the early 1900s.

The Chelsea Patriot deck clock’s case is custom made from phenolic resin, a durable, heat resistant resin designed to last for decades. The Patriot Wall Clock features time displayed in a classic 12/24 hour military format. The Patriot Deck clock has a second hand that allows for a more precise time display.

The Patriot Deck Clock has a brass screw locking hinge bezel. This hinge bezel allows for easy access to the German Quartz movement and battery.

The Patriot Deck Clock is a companion piece to the Patriot Deck Barometer, the Radio Room Clock ,Patriot Deck Time-Tide Clock and Patriot Deck Tide Instrument.

Product Announcement: Tidepieces Tide Clocks No Longer Available at BellClocks.com

Effective April 3, 2017, Tidepieces Tide Clocks will no longer be available at BellClocks.com. We regret this, and apologize for any inconvenience to our customers.

Windward Instruments (owner/operator of BellClocks.com) has been a Tidepieces Dealer for over 10 years, and was instrumental in helping launch Tidepieces and promote the brand online.

Windward Instruments has fulfilled most Tidepieces orders via Drop Shipment directly to the customer from Tidepieces.

The reason for this change:

In a surprise announcement from Alan Winick, owner of the Tidepieces brand, he has refused to continue drop shipments (shipment directly to retail customer) for 29 of the 33 models. This leaves only 4 Tidepieces models available for our drop ship customers.

Mr. Winick stated all Tidepieces models would be available if we agreed to meet new minimum order requirements, requiring us to purchase in larger quantity, thereby reducing Tidepieces cost, and increasing their profit.

Unfortunately many manufacturers who start online eventually find success in direct sales, or regional brick and mortar sales, and chose to abandon their online Dealers and customer base to maximize profit.

For this reason, Windward Instruments and BellClocks.com will discontinue Tidepieces Tide Clocks.

Since 1999, Windward Instruments has supported online business and ecommerce platforms which are primarily drop shipment based. These platforms allow for a wider variety of selection, and quicker shipment to customers, and tend to reduce prices.

We are happy that Mr. Winick has found success with  regional direct sales, brick and mortar retailers, and trade shows. We regret his decision regarding drop shipment, and wish him success.
