The D&D Combination Tendency Barometer, Thermometer, Hygrometer, Stormglass, A53 combines all of the best features and is our top of the line - a true presentation piece.

Functionally identical to any other DD Barometer tendency barometer, the beautiful mahogany stained wooden case with curved glass has an aluminum colored brass face plate, with a Storm Glass mounted beside the tendency barometer tubes, and a hygrometer mounted above the tubes. Mercury free barometer, similar to water barometers.

It consists of two liquid filled tubes. One tube in a U-shaped which is open ended and filled with a red fluid; and one closed thermometer tube filled with a blue fluid, mounted parallel to each other. When the fluid levels are the same, the weather is changing. When the red fluid level is below the blue fluid level, the weather is fair. When the red fluid level is above the blue, stormy weather is predicted (low pressure allows the red fluid to move up the tube).

The thermometer measures in both Celsius and Fahrenheit and the barometer measures in millibars/ hPa.

Windward Instruments will be completing updates to The Windward Store to increase functionality and "friendliness" which have been ongoing for about 2 months. These updates will not impact access to the store, shopping, ordering, or order tracking.

The changes were completed to our product detail pages in which the layout was expanded to increase information displayed while organizing the information in a more readable format. We also increased the size of product pictures.

Windward Instruments sites restored

We sincerely appreciate the patience shown by our customers during a very difficult outage. As of Noon EST, Friday February 26, 2010 our sites were back up and functional.

Windward Instruments is currently checking our website information for accuracy, as the sites were restored by our host using backup drives. As the host has not disclosed the date of backups used we must confirm that all information (product, pricing, etc.) is current and accurate.

Please be aware that while the sites are currently up we are in the early stages of verification of information and function. While we expect the sites to remain up, there is a possibility of sporadic shorter term outages should adjustments to the hardware be required, and may occur without notice dependent upon the situation.

Statements and details regarding the outage:

Windward Instruments websites - http://bellclocks.com, http://windwardinstruments.com were effected by a terrible issue at our hosting company on Saturday February 20, 2010. This resulted in a nearly 6 day outage, which included both websites, as well as all email (incoming and outgoing), and our ability to process orders.

Windward Instruments safeguards our customer information by simply not storing or retaining it, therefore no information was compromised or lost.

The outage was a result of a serious technical issue at our host company and not due to their negligence. Windward Instruments is currently engaged in discussion with our host to determine the best course of action going forward (ie; staying with the present company, or moving our online facilities to another company and location). Our relationship with the present company spans several years, and the events which created the outage were extremely rare. Should Windward Instruments determine change of host is needed, we will post announcements in advance to allow customers time to plan accordingly.

The water glass barometer has been around for about 400 years. You simply fill it with colored water and watch the level in the spout rise and fall with the changing weather.

A high pressure area will push the fluid level down in the spout and generally means fair weather. While a low pressure area will allow the fluid to rise in the spout and generally means foul weather. There is a quiet movement in Congress (both House and Senate) calling for a new "streamlined sales tax". Simply put, if enacted this would require online retailers to collect sales tax on every online sale even if you purchase from a business outside your state.

There is nothing streamlined about this tax. There are currently over 7,000 tax districts in the United States. The current "streamlined" portion is nothing more than a spreadsheet which lists the districts, their rates, and remittance dates and procedures. This tax would force every retailer selling products online to charge sales tax on every sale - regardless of where the business or cutomer are located - track and account for these taxes - and remit them to a taxing authority.

Many small and independent businesses - those the President and every elected official claims to support - simply don't have the ability to perform this function from the standpoint of the time and labor required, accounting, software, etc. It would put many of these businesses out of business and create yet more job losses to our economy.

This tax has been out there for a few years now, with very little support in Congress. Now, with the current orgy of spending in Washington, many members of Congress are supporting this move as a way to allow States to collect more tax without putting them in a position to raise Federal taxes.

This tax is being pushed hard by many Governors, and lobbied by mega retailers such as WalMart and others, who are buying Congressional support to pass a tax to eliminate small and independent retail competitors.

Many online shoppers purchase online for several reasons. Lower prices, unique items not found in local stores, and no sales tax to name a few. If Congress passes Streamlined sales tax, shoppers would lose the selection, ability to purchase products for less, savings in sales tax.

More importantly, we believe that many unique items (such as many of the products we carry) might disappear online altogether.

Small and independent businesses support and embrace unique and specialized items. Mega retailers are looking for products with only mass appeal - to sell massive numbers of the products to support huge bottom line numbers. Many of the unique products currently available online would not be available at these mega retailers, because they appeal to a small or specialized customer base and will not sell millions of "units".

Chelsea Clock discontinues all 24 Hour Clocks

Chelsea Clock Company discontinued all 24 Hour clocks without notice to dealers, effective March 1, 2008. BellClocks is very disappointed in Chelsea's decision, and have voiced our disappointment to their National Sales Director and Executive VP. Unfortunately, the decision stands.

Chelsea also discontinued a few other models of Timemaster. The lack of notice by Chelsea Clock prevented BellClocks.com from providing any notice to our customers, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

This decision removes all Chelsea Timemaster 24 hour military models, including one of our best sellers, the 40090 24 hour quartz model from the Chelsea line. The decision claims all 24 hour models, both brass and phenolic case models, quartz and mechanical movements. A few other Timemaster models were also discontinued.

Most 12 hour Chelsea Timemaster models remain available, at increased pricing (see our article regarding the Chelsea price increase).

We wanted to address numerous questions received via BellClocks.com email support, and customer support 800 number, regarding the significant price increase customers have experienced with Chelsea Clock products.

On February 25, 2008 Chelsea Clock Company notified dealers of a major price increase to be effective March 1, 2008. This is the second major price increase in as many years, and while we apologize for any inconvenience, the lack of notice from Chelsea precluded BellClocks from giving notice to our customers of the price hike.

We are noticing a trend of last minute pricing increases among several of our suppliers and manufacturers. Our best advise is to purchase at the best price you can as soon as you can - we don't think the trend will stop anytime soon.

Windward Instruments to Launch own Weather Instruments

Windward Instruments brand weather instruments will be available online at The Windward Store upon launch, and will be available at BellClocks.com shortly thereafter.

Windward Instruments will initially offer 2 weather instruments which match each other in size and design and offer very affordable pricing - below $50.00 (pictured above).

The instruments include a Barometer, and Thermometer Hygrometer (hydrometer) or "comfortmeter".

Both will feature a lightweight lacquered brass case in open back design, with shatter resistant plastic crystal lens, and french movements. Dial size will be around 3 3/4", with a rear diameter of around 4 1/4" and depth of 1 3/4". The instruments will include mounting screws, and will carry a 1 Year Warranty.

The Windward Instruments Barometer will feature the popular "old fashioned" dial design, with "change" at center top of dial.

One feature of the Windward Instruments barometer which is unique in this price range is that it utilizes the full dial for display of measurements similar to some higher priced hi-sensitivity units. The advantage is that small changes in pressure are very evident, as the indicator moves further to indicate change.

The Thermo Hygro favors an easy to ready "European" design, with separate indicators for temperature and humidity. Temperature will be displayed in the upper dial, and humidity displayed lower dial. Humidity range indicates "normal" range for comfort.

Christmas Shopping Online Volume 3

Welcome to Volume 3, our last installment of BellClocks Christmas Shopping Online. This volume will focus on "too good to be true" and online security.

Please review the first 2 Volumes, as they work hand in hand with the information we'll present today to help keep you safer while shopping online.

Every year the number of online shoppers increases, and the money spent increases exponentially. The vast majority of shoppers use credit or debit cards to make purchases, over 90%, and the majority of merchants don't accept checks or mailed payments. Most credit card companies offer some form of protection against fraudlent charges, so our suggestions will focus on common sense ways to protect yourself even more.

1. "Too good to be true" deals are usually just that. Chances are not likely that you will find a $1,000 item for $9.95 with free shipping - but you'll see "deals" like this advertised all over the web. Simply put, we recommend ignoring these "offers". These cons are normally designed to collect information via an order form or similar instrument, many times including credit card information, and the result is never good.

2. Phishing/fake websites: These are websites that are designed to collect personal information through a number of scams. Many are designed to appear like an online store. We suggest that you look for business information as described in Volume 1. Unless you are comfortable with the site, don't fill out any forms at the site.

3. You can take an additional step in verification by verifying business information with the State they are located in. Nearly every State requires retail merchants to complete a licensing procedure, and many States now provide that information via a State website. This is an invaluable resource to shoppers that is not utilized often enough.

4. Many online shoppers are beginning to use the new Internet Explorer 7 browser which features a "phishing" filter built in. There are several problems being reported with this filter, genuine sites are being identified as "phishing" sites - while phishing sites are not always being identified as a threat. The best way to know, is to verify information yourself - and with the tools we've mentioned, this can be done with little effort.

5. Looking for "secure" areas where you input your credit card information.

Most browsers has some indication of a secure connection. Most have a picture of some kind
(a padlock, safe, etc.) and/or the colors yellow or red (the address bar on your browser will feature a
color to indicate a secure connection). When you have done your shopping, and are checking out with the perfect Christmas present, you should see some indication of secure connection when you get to the credit card input area.

In simple terms, a secure connection encrypts (scrambles) any information you give - much like "codes"
used by the military. It's done electronically, is then "decoded" by software. Encryption makes collection of your information very difficult, as the "scrambling" effect would make information appear as random text until properly decoded.

Welcome to Volume 2 of BellClocks Christmas shopping online. This article is "reposted" from last year. This volume will focus on policy and service issues. These are especially important if you are shopping online for Christmas gifts and need delivery prior to the big day.

Remember to arm yourself with the information discussed in Volume 1 first, then move into this information.

Customer Service

As you shop online you will notice that nearly every business website boasts of excellent customer service. Since the only meaningful judgement of excellent service is the individual customer, we have some suggestions of easy ways to test these service statements.

1. Send an email or customer service request through the site. This may give you an idea of what to expect. No business is perfect, so be patient but expect a reply. If you're wondering what to say or ask in this message, honestly tell them you are testing their service.

2. Another test could be to contact them by phone. Again, be patient but expect a reply. Many businesses (including BellClocks) utilize voicemail to offer a call back service if you leave your information.

Again, we stress some patience this time of year. Nearly every business gets busy during the holiday shopping season. Patience means allowing a little extra time - not weeks. As you receive replies, you can accurately judge for yourself if the service is acceptable. If not, shop elsewhere.

Business Policies

A business policy is any policy under which a business operates. These include terms of sale, return policies, refunds and exchanges, guarantees, price match, and others. Policy statements are very important to shoppers, as they may obligate a customer to certain conditions, much like a contract.

Like contact information we discussed in volume 1, this information should be located in an easy to find location on any online shopping website, and we strongly recommend a thorough review of posted policies prior to making any purchase. A couple of tips:

1. We would advise shoppers to beware of any shopping site with no published policies.
2. Business policies should be specific to the company you are going to do business with.

To explain policies "specific to the company" - if you are shopping at a site any policy statement should be specific to that site, not a statement that says customers are covered under the policy of a third party or the website host.

As the Christmas shopping season begins, and shoppers search the web for Christmas and holiday presents, questions of online shopping security become important. It is estimated that online shoppers will spend a record amount in online purchases this year, in the Billions of dollars.

With this in mind, BellClocks.com is going to post some tips over the next few days, to help make online shopping safer for everyone. These tips are not specific to Christmas shopping online, they apply to online shopping throughout the year.

Our first tip will focus on basic credibility of online businesses, and some simple ways shoppers can help protect themselves.

Christmas shopping online tip Number 1:

Before shopping online at any website, always ask yourself: "Is this a real business?". You can usually answer the question easily and quickly by following these simple tips:

Look for the business information, including an address, and phone number. This information is usually located on the main page (at the very least), normally at the top or bottom of the page. Also check for any "contact us" or "about us" or similar pages, which may contain contact information. These areas of a website are normally accessible via tabs, buttons, or text links located on the main or welcome page.

Most businesses want to be sure their customers are able to contact them in the event of any issues with the product or service, as this is the basic foundation of customer service. This allows the businesses to respond to any issue, and fosters communication with shoppers. It also helps protect businesses and customers from fraud and scams.

We strongly recommend shoppers beware of any site which offers contact by "email only", or does not publish contact information including address and phone number.

One other thing which bears mentioning - U. S. shoppers should be careful when shopping at any site owned by a foreign company. We do not suggest that foreign companies are dishonest. While credit cards provide some measure of protection, serious disputes requiring legal action could be under the jurisdiction of a foreign court.

NIST Calibrated Instruments now available

NIST Calibrated Instruments are now available at The Windward Store in response to numerous customer requests to be able to purchase the instruments directly from the site. Previously, the service was offered only through direct inquiry. The instruments are also affordable, all priced well under $200.00, as compared to other calibration programs costing more than twice that amount.

The NIST calibration process will require approximately 3-5 business days in the lab prior to shipment. Upon completion, the instrument will receive a calibration certificate to NIST standards. The calibration is performed by Abbeon Cal inc.

Chelsea Ship's Bell Clock - Adjustment of Gong Time

ADJUSTMENT OF GONG TIME, Chelsea Ship's Bell Clocks:

The clear resonant tone of Chelsea Ship's Bell clocks is obtained by means of a controlled strike hammer dropping onto a coiled steel gong. The clock must be in its natural upright position (12 o'clock up) to have it strike properly. Should the striking tone be "deadened" or "flat" - or if no gong tone is heard when the strike mechanism is operating, an easy adjustment can usually be made.

The flat tone is caused by the hammer head resting on or too close to the gong coil. This fault is corrected by merely bending the hammer wire up a little - just enough to have its head not touch the gong coil when the hammer is in its rest position.

Ship's Bell clocks have an opening in the back through which the hammer wire can be reached for adjustments. Proceed as follows:

1. At some hour point when the clock has finished striking an EVEN number of bells, remove the back cover plate by unscrewing the three screws.
2. Lift and drop the hammer wire with your finger so you can hear and see how the resonance of the gong tone is muted by the hammer's leather tip resting on the gong.
3. To adjust the hammer, hold the hammer wire while it is in the rest position with one hand. Do not press down on the wire. With a pair of needle nose pliers or any rigid object, lift and bend the hammer end of the wire upward just enough to clear the gong coil while in the resting position.
Then repeat step 2 to determine if the gong tone has been corrected.

If, after following these instructions, the striking does not occur at the hour and half hour markings on the dial, then the clock must be sent back to the factory for correction.

Winding the Chelsea Ship's Bell Clock

One of the most common questions we receive is regarding the winding of ship's bell clocks. These instructions are for the Chelsea Ship's Bell Clock model:

Wind your ship's bell clock fully once each week at approximately the same time, on the same day. The left hand winding arbor is for the strike-side mainspring and the right hand winding arbor is for the time-side mainspring. Be sure to wind both fully starting with the left side. VERY IMPORTANT - If the clock has run down, it must be wound FIRST before setting the hands. If the minute hand is locked, this is an indication that the levers are jammed. To release, simply wind the clock fully on both sides and then move the minute hand backwards 1 hour or more. Then reset the time allowing the clock to strike at the hour and the half hour.

To answer several questions we receive, and to help those who have used Chelsea ship's bell clocks, Bellclocks is going to post instruction sections over the next few days, for that model. These instructions are taken (with permission) from the BellClocks.com Chelsea Ship's Bell Clock page.

The first installment is setting the clock:

SETTING THE HANDS:
Your ship's bell clock leaves the factory thoroughly tested and fully wound. First, remove the black tube from the winding arbor. (Save and replace tube when you are shipping the clock or away for a long period of time.) Next, move the minute hand clockwise to the correct time, stopping at the hour and half hour to allow the bells to strike their full count. The hour hand should not be touched during this operation.

The correct striking count may not develop at the first point when moving the hands forward to the correct setting time, this is normal, but will self correct at the next full hour count. DO NOT force the hands when setting the time. Should they lock at any point, simply move the minute hand backwards through one striking position and then forward to the correct time ensuring to stop at the hour and half-hour to allow the bells to strike the full count.

On the SHIP'S BELL clock, a "warn" occurs at 20 minutes past the hour and 10 minutes before the hour. This means that for 10 minutes prior to each striking point, the gears and levers of the striking mechanism fall into correct position. Thus it is advisable that whenever the striking clock is to be reset, the minute hand ONLY should be slowly rotated forward (clockwise) to the next striking point and then the clock allowed to strike its full count. Adjustments should never be made during a strike zone, only from 5 to 15 minutes past the hour or 25 to 15 minutes before the hour.

Windward Instruments joins the ORA

Windward Instruments is now a supporting member of the Online Retailing Alliance (ORA).

The ORA is part of the Electronic Retailers Association (ERA) which is focused on legislative issues facing merchants who market directly via TV, Radio, and the Internet. All Windward Instruments properties, including BellClocks.com, and OceanClocks.com support the ORA.

Windward Instruments agrees with the core belief of the ORA, which is the belief that customers who use the internet to make purchases of products maintain free and open access to ALL merchants. Further, the ORA fully supports the open internet project, to protect internet users from the so-called "email tax" or fee, which would see charges for every email sent.

ORA activities are aimed at protecting online and direct merchants from government and telecommunications company interests. These interests seek to limit customer access to only companies willing to pay for customers, thus eliminating smaller businesses without the financial means to compete. This would see a handful of companies dictating pricing on nearly every product currently available online, doing away with customer choice, or best pricing.

Government interests, specifically the Governors Association, has pressured Congress for years to force online retailers to collect sales tax for every individual tax district in the U S. This would mean that every customer purchase online would be subject to that customer's sales tax, be it state or local. Obviously this would increase pricing to customers who currently enjoy savings by purchasing online, if their local municipality requires tax.

Customer Announcement - Weems & Plath Pricing

In compliance with our customer service policy, Windward Instruments is announcing a forthcoming price adjustment which will impact our Weems and Plath customers.

Effective May 15, 2007 Weems and Plath, manufacturer of a popular instrument line, will establish a MAP (minimum advertised price) policy. All factory authorized dealers will be required to adjust pricing of all Weems and Plath instruments to be in compliance with this policy.

BellClocks.com, the retail division of Windward Instruments, will change pricing effective May 15, 2007 to be in compliance with MAP policy. The pricing adjustment will affect all Weems and Plath products, including Ship's Bell Clocks, Quartz Clocks, Barometers, and Navigation instruments.

In addition to the price adjustment, several Weems and Plath products will be discontinued by BellClocks.com, as we simply can not justify the higher price to our customers, based upon quality and comparables readily available in the market. Some of the products being discontinued include the entire Eastport Large and Small, and Westport Large and Small collections, all chart weights, and the 4000 electronic marine barometer.

BellClocks.com will also discontinue sales of Weems and Plath Orion Ship's Bell, and Ship's Wheel Bell clock models due to serious quality issues with those models.

Windward Instruments, and BellClocks.com will continue to provide service to all customers who have purchased any of the discontinued items.
